How to Wash a Microfiber Glasses Cloth

19 Sep 2026
Clean EBJDE microfiber glasses cloths ready for washing and lens care

Wash a microfiber glasses cloth with lukewarm water and a small amount of mild, additive-free detergent, rinse it thoroughly and let it air-dry in a clean place. Avoid fabric softener, bleach, dryer sheets and high heat because they can leave residue or reduce the cloth's ability to pick up oil and dust. Follow the cloth's care label when it gives different instructions.

Why a lens cloth needs regular cleaning

A microfiber cloth collects skin oils, cosmetics, dust and cleaning-product residue. Reusing it when dirty can smear lenses and may drag trapped particles across a coating. Washing restores a cleaner contact surface; it cannot repair fibers that are melted, heavily contaminated or worn out.

Hand-washing method

  1. Wash your hands so lotion and grease do not transfer to the cloth.
  2. Rinse the cloth in lukewarm water to release loose particles.
  3. Add a small amount of mild liquid detergent without softener, fragrance oils or bleach.
  4. Gently work the solution through the fabric. Do not scrub it against a dirty sink surface.
  5. Rinse repeatedly until the water runs clear and no slippery residue remains.
  6. Press out water gently without aggressive twisting.
  7. Hang or lay flat to air-dry where it will not collect dust.

Can you machine-wash a glasses cloth?

Yes, when the care label permits it. Place cloths in a clean mesh bag, wash them separately from cotton towels and linty garments, use a gentle cool or warm cycle and choose a small amount of simple detergent. Skip fabric softener and dryer sheets. Air-drying is the safest default; use only low heat if the manufacturer allows machine drying.

Products and habits to avoid

  • Fabric softener or dryer sheets that can coat the fibers
  • Bleach or harsh stain removers
  • High dryer heat, ironing or placing the cloth on a radiator
  • Washing with greasy kitchen towels or lint-shedding cotton
  • Using the cloth while it is damp, musty or visibly dirty

How often should you wash it?

Wash the cloth whenever it feels oily, leaves streaks, has touched a dirty surface or contains visible particles. Frequency depends on use: a daily cloth may need frequent washing, while a spare kept sealed and clean may go longer. Do not rely on appearance alone if the cloth has contacted cosmetics or skin oil.

Drying and storage

Let the cloth dry completely before folding it. Store it in a clean pouch or closed compartment away from keys, loose dust and cleaning chemicals. Do not leave it loose in a pocket or bag where it can collect abrasive debris.

When to replace a microfiber cloth

Replace it when edges are frayed, the surface feels stiff, embedded particles will not rinse away, odors remain after washing or the cloth continues to smear after a careful residue-free wash. A cloth used with polish, household chemicals or automotive products should not return to lens care.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wash a glasses cloth with dish soap?

A tiny amount of mild additive-free soap may work for hand washing, but rinse extremely well and avoid formulas with lotion, fragrance oil or conditioning additives.

Can I use fabric softener?

No. It can leave a film that reduces cleaning performance and causes streaks.

Can I tumble-dry the cloth?

Check the label. Air-drying avoids heat damage; if permitted, use low or no heat and no dryer sheet.

Why does a clean cloth still smear?

Detergent residue, fabric-softener film, oil that was not removed or damaged fibers may be responsible. Rinse again or replace the cloth.
