How to Choose a Lens Index: A Practical Guide
Lens index is one of several factors that influences how a prescription lens is made. A higher refractive index allows a lens material to bend light more efficiently, which can help reduce the thickness required for a given prescription and frame design. It does not automatically mean that a lens is “better” for every wearer.
What does lens index mean?
The refractive index describes how strongly a lens material bends light. Common spectacle-lens materials may be offered around 1.50 or 1.56, 1.60 or 1.61, 1.67 and 1.74, although exact materials and availability vary by lab, country and lens design.
As index increases, the same optical power can often be produced with less lens curvature or thickness. The visible difference is usually most noticeable when prescription strength, lens size and frame shape would otherwise create a thick center or edge.
Higher index can make lenses thinner—but that is only part of the decision
Choosing a lens index should consider the entire eyewear setup, not a single prescription number. Important factors include:
- Your full prescription: sphere, cylinder, axis and any prism or addition requirements can affect lens design.
- Frame size and shape: larger lens openings can require more lens material. A smaller, well-centered frame can sometimes reduce thickness significantly.
- Pupil position and centration: how your eyes sit within the frame affects the amount of lens material needed away from the optical center.
- Lens material and design: aspheric or other lens designs can influence profile, appearance and optical performance.
- Weight and comfort: a thinner lens is not always the lightest possible combination because material density also varies.
What are the tradeoffs of higher-index lenses?
Higher-index materials can be useful, but they may cost more and can have different optical characteristics from standard-index materials. Some high-index materials have lower Abbe values, which can make color fringing more noticeable for some wearers, particularly away from the optical center. Higher-index surfaces can also reflect more light, so an appropriate anti-reflective coating is commonly considered.
The practical balance between thickness, weight, optics, durability, coating and price depends on the individual prescription and frame.
Do not choose index from a universal prescription chart alone
Simple online charts can be useful for understanding the categories, but there is no single prescription cutoff that determines the ideal index for every person. Two people with similar prescriptions may receive different recommendations because their frames, lens dimensions, pupil positions and visual needs differ.
If you already have a prescription, ask the dispensing optician or lens provider which index and lens design they recommend for your specific frame. For stronger or more complex prescriptions, professional centration and fitting become especially important.
PD and frame measurements also matter
Pupillary distance helps position the optical centers of the lenses relative to your eyes.
