How to Clean Eyeglasses Without Scratching the Lenses

17 Sep 2026
Soft EBJDE microfiber cloths for cleaning eyeglass lenses without scratching

To clean eyeglasses without scratching, remove loose grit before wiping. Use clean hands, lukewarm water when the eyewear allows it, a small amount of mild lotion-free dish soap or lens-approved cleaner, and a clean microfiber cloth.

What you need

  • Lukewarm running water, when suitable for the eyewear
  • Mild lotion-free dish soap or cleaner approved for the lens coating
  • A clean, soft microfiber lens cloth
  • A clean towel for your hands and work surface

Use a cloth reserved for lenses so oils, grit and household-cleaner residue are not transferred to the glasses.

Step-by-step cleaning method

  1. Wash your hands. Remove lotion, oil and debris before touching the lenses.
  2. Rinse the glasses. Use lukewarm—not hot—water to carry away loose particles.
  3. Add a small amount of cleaner. Use a drop of mild lotion-free dish soap or a product confirmed safe for the lens coating.
  4. Clean gently. Rub both lens surfaces, frame edges, nose pads and temples with clean fingertips.
  5. Rinse thoroughly. Soap residue can leave streaks.
  6. Dry with clean microfiber. Blot and wipe gently; inspect the cloth first for trapped grit.

What not to use

Avoid paper towels, tissues and clothing, especially on dry dusty lenses. Do not use household window cleaner, bleach, abrasive powder or unapproved solvents. Hot water and harsh chemicals may damage some coatings or frame materials. When the manufacturer provides special instructions, follow them.

Cleaning on the go

If water is unavailable, first blow away loose dust without touching the surface, then use a lens-cleaning spray or pre-moistened wipe labeled for your lens coating. Avoid rubbing visible sand or grit across the lens. A travel cloth should be stored in a clean pouch rather than loose in a pocket.

How to wash the microfiber cloth

Follow its care label. Wash separately or by hand with a mild residue-free detergent, rinse well and avoid fabric softener, which can leave a film. Let the cloth dry fully in a clean place before reuse.

Special situations

Coated lenses

Use only products approved for the coating. If a cloudy area does not clean away, the coating may be damaged rather than dirty.

Electronic or smart eyewear

Do not rinse unless the manufacturer specifically permits it. Follow the device care instructions.

Ultrasonic cleaners

Compatibility varies by frame, coating and assembly. Confirm with the eyewear manufacturer or optician before use.

Frequently asked questions

Can dry wiping scratch eyeglasses?

Dry wiping can drag grit across a lens. Rinsing or using appropriate lens spray first reduces that risk.

Can I use my shirt?

It may contain dust, fibers, detergent residue or body oils, so a clean lens microfiber cloth is safer.

Why are my lenses still cloudy?

Residue, an oily cloth or coating damage may be responsible. Reclean with suitable materials; if cloudiness remains, ask an optician to inspect the lenses.
