How to Clean Metal Eyeglass Frames Safely

23 Sep 2026
EBJDE microfiber cloths and cleaning supplies for caring for metal eyeglass frames

Clean metal eyeglass frames by removing loose grit first, using a small amount of lens-safe cleaner or mild soap when the eyewear instructions allow it, and drying hinges, screws and nose-pad hardware completely. Avoid abrasive polish, household glass cleaner, prolonged soaking and aggressive scrubbing of plated or painted finishes.

Inspect before adding liquid

Start with a clean cloth so particles are not dragged across lenses or frame finishes.

Check for loose lenses, green or white corrosion, peeling finish, cracked solder joints and missing screws. Cleaning cannot repair these problems. If the frame has electronics, wood, leather, gemstones or a specialty coating, follow its manufacturer instructions.

What you need

  • Clean lukewarm water when rinsing is permitted
  • A tiny amount of mild lotion-free soap or approved eyewear cleaner
  • Clean microfiber lens cloths
  • A soft clean brush or cotton swab for accessible crevices
  • A dry towel for the work surface

Step-by-step metal-frame cleaning

  1. Wash and dry your hands.
  2. Rinse loose dust away if the eyewear is safe to rinse. Do not wipe sand across a dry lens.
  3. Apply approved cleaner lightly or use diluted mild soap as directed.
  4. Clean the bridge, rims and temples with fingertips or a soft cloth.
  5. Work gently around nose-pad arms and hinge barrels; do not bend them.
  6. Rinse away soap residue where appropriate.
  7. Blot water, then dry lenses and frame with clean microfiber.
  8. Open the temples and dry around screws and hinges before storage.

Cleaning hinges and screws

Use minimal moisture around hardware. Do not scrape dark residue with a metal tool. Persistent corrosion, stiffness or discoloration can indicate plating wear or damaged hardware; an optician can inspect it without placing the lenses at risk.

Nose pads and temple tips

Oil commonly collects where pads touch the nose and temple tips contact skin. Clean these surfaces without twisting the pad arms. Replace yellowed, cracked or hardened removable parts instead of scrubbing them aggressively.

Worn removable pads may need replacement after the mounting style is identified.

What not to use

  • Abrasive metal polish or toothpaste
  • Bleach, ammonia or household window cleaner
  • Paper towels on dusty lenses
  • Very hot water
  • Ultrasonic cleaning unless the complete eyewear is approved for it
  • Excessive pressure on thin rims, pad arms or decorative finishes

Common problems

The frame still feels greasy

Use a clean cloth and less product; residue often comes from a dirty cloth or un-rinsed cleaner.

The hinge feels stiff

Stop forcing it. Dry the area and have damaged or corroded hardware inspected.

The finish is changing color

Stop cleaning. Plating or coating wear will not be corrected by stronger chemicals.

Frequently asked questions

Can metal glasses be soaked?

Avoid prolonged soaking because liquids can remain in hinges and under finishes.

Can alcohol be used?

Only when the eyewear and coating instructions specifically allow the formula.

How often should frames be cleaned?

Clean when oil, sweat or residue builds up, using the gentlest effective method.
