How to Clean an Eyeglass Case

20 Sep 2026
EBJDE hard eyeglass case prepared for routine interior and exterior cleaning

Clean an eyeglass case by emptying it, removing loose grit first and using a method that matches its shell, lining and closure. Wipe structured cases with a lightly damp soft cloth unless the manufacturer permits washing; hand-wash washable fabric pouches with mild detergent. Let every part dry completely before returning the glasses.

Why case cleaning matters

Dust, sand, cosmetics and skin oil can collect inside a case and transfer back to lenses or frames. Cleaning the glasses while placing them in a dirty case repeats the problem. Regular inspection also reveals damaged lining, exposed hardware or a closure that may contact the eyewear.

Remove loose particles before wiping so they are not dragged across the lining.

Start with the care label and materials

Identify whether the case is fabric, PU-coated, plastic, metal, EVA or a mixed construction. Magnets, cardboard reinforcement, glued lining and metal hinges can make soaking unsuitable. When product instructions differ from general advice, follow them.

How to clean a hard or semi-hard case

  1. Remove glasses, cloths and accessories.
  2. Turn the opening downward and gently shake out debris.
  3. Use a clean soft brush or low-suction vacuum attachment for corners.
  4. Wipe the exterior with a lightly damp cloth and mild soap solution if compatible.
  5. Clean the lining by blotting rather than saturating it.
  6. Wipe away soap residue and leave the case open to dry fully.

How to wash a soft eyeglass pouch

If the care label permits washing, hand-wash the pouch in cool or lukewarm water with a small amount of mild detergent. Work the solution gently through the fabric, rinse thoroughly and reshape it without wringing. Air-dry completely. Avoid fabric softener if the pouch also functions as a lens-contact cloth.

Material-specific cautions

PU or coated surfaces

Use minimal moisture and avoid alcohol, solvents and abrasive scrubbing that may dull or lift the coating.

Metal cases

Dry hinges, seams and exposed metal promptly to reduce moisture retention.

Velvet or flocked lining

Remove debris with a soft brush or gentle adhesive lint tool that is safe for the lining; test an inconspicuous area first.

Magnetic closures

Do not flood the closure area. Wipe it clean and dry it promptly.

What not to use

  • Bleach, window cleaner or harsh solvents
  • Strong fragrance sprays that can leave residue
  • Abrasive brushes on soft lining or coated exteriors
  • High dryer heat unless explicitly permitted
  • Heavy soaking of glued, reinforced or magnetic cases
  • Glasses inside the case before it is fully dry

When to replace the case

Replace a case when lining peels onto lenses, hard parts become exposed, the closure no longer stays shut, mold or persistent odor remains, or the shell is crushed and presses on the frame. Cleaning cannot restore safe clearance to a deformed case.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put an eyeglass case in the washing machine?

Only if its care label explicitly allows it. Structured shells, glued lining, cardboard reinforcement and magnetic closures usually call for gentler cleaning.

How often should I clean the case?

Inspect it whenever you clean the glasses and clean it when debris, oil, spills or odor appear.

Can I use alcohol wipes?

Only when the case manufacturer confirms material compatibility. Alcohol may affect coatings, adhesives or finishes.

Why does the case smell after cleaning?

Trapped moisture or residue may remain. Air it open until fully dry; replace it if odor or visible mold persists.
