Face shape can be a useful starting point when choosing eyeglasses, but it is not a rulebook. The best frame is the one that fits your bridge, sits comfortably at your temples and ears, keeps your eyes well positioned in the lenses, and matches the look you want.

Start by identifying your general face shape
Look straight into a mirror with your hair away from your face. Compare the relative width of your forehead, cheekbones and jawline, then notice whether your jaw is rounded, angular or tapered. Many people fall between two categories, so use the descriptions below as style guidance rather than a strict label.
Oval face
An oval face is typically a little longer than it is wide, with gently curved lines and cheekbones that may be slightly wider than the forehead or jaw.
Frames to try: rectangular, square, round, browline and many geometric styles can all work well. A useful starting point is a frame that is close to the width of the widest part of your face.

Round face
A round face usually has softer curves, a rounded jawline and similar width and length proportions.
Frames to try: rectangular, square and subtle geometric shapes can add visual definition. Frames with a slightly wider horizontal line may also create a more elongated look. Avoid choosing a frame only because a guide says it is “correct”; bridge fit and lens size still matter more.
Square face
A square face often has a stronger jawline with the forehead, cheekbones and jaw appearing relatively similar in width.
Frames to try: round, oval and softly curved frames can contrast with angular facial lines. If you prefer a sharper look, a carefully sized rectangular frame can work as well.
Heart-shaped face
A heart-shaped face is generally wider through the forehead and cheekbones and narrows toward the chin.
Frames to try: lightweight oval, round, aviator-inspired or gently upswept shapes can balance the upper and lower portions of the face. Frames with excessive visual weight across the brow may feel dominant on some wearers, but personal style should decide the final choice.
Triangle face
A triangle face is often wider through the jaw and narrower toward the forehead.
Frames to try: browline, cat-eye-inspired and frames with more detail across the upper rim can draw attention upward and create visual balance.

Fit matters more than face shape
Before choosing a frame based on style alone, check these practical fit points:
- Bridge fit: the frame should sit securely without painful pressure or constant sliding.
- Frame width: the temples should not be forced outward or leave a large gap at the sides.
- Temple length: the arms should reach comfortably behind your ears without excessive pressure.
- Lens position: your eyes should sit in a sensible position within the lens openings for the intended lens design.
- Movement: look down and gently move your head. A well-fitting frame should remain reasonably stable.

If a frame looks right but keeps sliding, see our guide to how to keep glasses from slipping. For small fit adjustments, you can also compare anti-slip eyeglass accessories or replacement nose pads, matching the accessory type and size to the frame before ordering.
Choose the frame you actually want to wear
Face-shape advice is most useful for generating ideas. Color, frame thickness, lens size, hairstyle and personal style can change the overall effect as much as the outline of your face. Try several shapes, compare the fit from the front and side, and choose the pair that feels comfortable and looks like you.
